“Rumyantsev victories” Obelisk

Obelisk in honor of the victories won by the Russian army under the command of Count Pyotr Alexandrovich Rumyantsev, was erected in 1799 by the architect V. Brenna. Rumyantsev Obelisk was originally on Mars floor “Rumyantsev victories” obelisk. But in 1818, the eminent architect and urban planner, KI Russia, he was moved to Vasilievsky Island, the square between the Academy of Fine Arts and the 1st Cadet Corps, where at one time studied Rumyantsev.

Set on a granite monument with steps stylobate. Marble pedestal of the monument is decorated with bas-relief military armor, bronze wreaths and garlands. Total height of the granite obelisk, which is crowned with a bronze ball and eagle sitting on it is more than twenty-one meters. Count Pyotr Alexandrovich Rumyantsev (1725 – 1796) – an outstanding Russian commander, Field Marshal. Becoming an officer in December 1740, Rumyantsev was involved in the Russian-Swedish War of 1741 – 1743′s, and in the Seven Years War 1756 – 1763′s. During the Russian-Turkish war of 1768 – 1774′s he was able to organize the defeat of a superior enemy in battles on rivers and Cahul Largo (1770), and in 1774 a decisive offensive forced the Turks to sign peace. In memory of this, in 1775, the Mint issued medal with profile Rumyantsev and his family made an honorary prefix Transdanubia. Since 1764 he also served as the Governor Stone. At the end of the XVIII century as a result of intrigues GA Potemkin and other courtiers Rumyantsev was removed from command of the army. A sculpture of a graph is also present among the figures of the Companions of the Empress Catherine II on a monument in her honor, which is located on Ostrovsky Square.

In the sixties the XIX century by architect N. Kovrigina around the obelisk was broken square. It was surrounded by a beautiful iron fence on a granite pedestal and called Rumyantsev. On the sides of the monument are the fountains of the famous master A. Briullov. A few years ago, ended overhaul Rumyantsev garden, dominated the obelisk which is the same name.
